Which Word files are supported?

Both the older .doc format and the modern .docx format are supported, up to 25 MB per file. A .doc file is normalized to the modern .docx format as part of compressing it, so your download comes back as a .docx rather than a .doc — see our DOC vs DOCX guide if you want the difference explained. A password-protected Word document should have its password removed in Word first (File → Info → Protect Document), since an encrypted file cannot be read.

Why compress a Word document?
