A PDF is drawn from vector instructions and fonts — sharp at any zoom level, by definition. A JPG or PNG is a fixed grid of pixels — sharp only up to the resolution it was created at, and blurry the moment you view it any larger. Converting from one to the other means picking a resolution at that moment, and the wrong pick is almost always why the result looks soft.
PDF to Image offers a quality choice before you convert: Normal (150 DPI) or High (300 DPI). DPI here means dots per inch — how many pixels get packed into each inch of the original page, and a higher number means more pixel data captured from the same page, which is what makes zooming in or printing look crisp instead of soft. Normal is tuned for viewing on a screen, emailing, or posting to the web — plenty sharp at the size it’s actually displayed, and a noticeably smaller file. This is where blur shows up: if you take a Normal-quality image and then zoom in past 100%, or print it at a large size, you’re asking pixels that were never captured to appear, and the image can’t invent detail that wasn’t in the resolution it was rendered at. High captures four times the pixel data of Normal for the same page, which is what print-quality output and close zooming actually need — it produces a larger file, and because of that this tool supports fewer pages per conversion at High quality than at Normal.
Match the setting to what you’re actually about to do: viewing on a phone or in an email, sharing on social media, quick reference — Normal is genuinely enough, and blur you’d see at High usually isn’t visible at these sizes anyway. Printing the image, using it in a document meant for print, or zooming in on fine text or a detailed diagram — go High. This is the case people convert at Normal by habit and then wonder why print output looks soft.
It’s not always the DPI setting, either. JPG compression itself can look blurry at close range, distinct from resolution — JPG is a lossy format, and heavy compression introduces soft blocky artifacts especially around sharp text edges, even at a resolution that should otherwise be sharp. If a High-quality conversion of a text-heavy page still looks slightly fuzzy right at the letters, try PNG instead of JPG — PNG is lossless, so lines and text edges stay perfectly crisp regardless of compression, at the cost of a larger file. For a page that’s mostly photographs rather than text, JPG’s artifacts are far less noticeable and the smaller file size is usually the better tradeoff. And the original PDF might already be low-resolution: if the PDF itself was built from a low-quality scan or a heavily compressed source image, converting it to JPG or PNG at any DPI just reveals blur that was already baked into the file — no output setting fixes a source that was never sharp to begin with. Zoom into the original PDF at 200% before converting; if it already looks soft there, the image conversion isn’t the problem.
Getting it right comes down to three decisions: work out what the image is actually for, screen or print, before converting; pick High for anything print-bound or that’ll be zoomed into, Normal for everything else; and choose PNG over JPG specifically for text-heavy pages where edge sharpness matters more than file size.
