Why compression doesn’t have to hurt quality
A PDF is made of different kinds of content, and they respond to compression very differently:
- Text and vector graphics (fonts, lines, tables, logos drawn as shapes) are stored as instructions, not pixels. A good compressor never touches them — which is why text stays perfectly sharp no matter how much the file shrinks.
- Images are where nearly all the size lives. A photo embedded at print resolution can be 20× larger than it needs to be for reading on a screen — shrinking it to a sensible resolution is invisible at normal zoom.
- Overhead — duplicate fonts, unused objects, leftovers from editing — can be stripped entirely with zero effect on how the document looks.
So “compressing a PDF” done properly means: leave the text alone, resize oversized images to what the eye can actually use, and throw away invisible junk. The quality you see survives; the bytes you don’t see disappear.
How to compress a PDF and keep the quality

If your text-only PDF barely shrinks, that’s not a failure — there was simply no fat to trim. In that case size problems are better solved by splitting the PDF into parts.
Common mistakes that do destroy quality
- Compressing a compressed file again and again. Each lossy pass re-encodes images. Compress once, from the best original you have.
- Printing to PDF to “shrink” it. Print-to-PDF often rasterizes clean text into images — the file may get bigger and blurrier. Use a real compressor instead.
- Scanning at 600 DPI in color for plain text. The bloat starts at the scanner. 150–200 DPI black-and-white scans of text documents look identical and start 10× smaller.
