Document feeders have opinions about page order, and they’re often wrong. Here are the three ways a scan comes out scrambled, and what each one needs.
Problem 1: the whole document is backwards
Some feeders take the stack face-down and output it in reverse, so page 1 is last. Every page is present and correctly oriented — the sequence is simply flipped.
Fix: upload it to Reorder PDF Pages and click Reverse. The entire document flips back to front in one click. This is the single most common scan-order problem and the fastest to fix.
Problem 2: a manual duplex scan interleaved wrongly
No duplex feeder, so you scanned all the fronts, flipped the stack, and scanned all the backs. The result is pages 1, 3, 5, 7… followed by the backs — and the backs are usually in reverse order too, because flipping the stack reversed it.
Fix: this one needs manual work, and the thumbnail grid is what makes it manageable. Upload the file, and drag each back page into position after its front. On a phone, use the arrow buttons on each thumbnail instead of dragging. The position numbers update as you go, so you can confirm the sequence before downloading.
If your scanner offers a “merge two scans, reversing the second” option, use it next time — it exists for exactly this.
Problem 3: one or two pages in the wrong place
A page misfed and got rescanned at the end. A signature page landed at the front. A section from another document got mixed in.
Fix: drag the stray pages where they belong, and click the × on anything that shouldn’t be there at all. Reordering and deleting happen in the same pass, so you download once rather than running two tools. The header keeps a running count of deleted pages, and Reset restores everything to how you uploaded it, deletions included.
Why doing this on the PDF is better than rescanning
- No quality loss. Pages are copied across exactly as they are — the pages are pictures and they’re moved as-is. Nothing is re-rendered, compressed, or downgraded.
- You can see what you’re moving. The thumbnails are drawn in your own browser; the order you build is then applied to the original file on the server.
- It’s reversible until you download. Reset undoes every move and every deletion.
Sort out the orientation too
Pages that fed in sideways need Rotate PDF rather than reordering — each page has its own rotate button, or Rotate All if the whole document came out on its side.
A sensible order of operations for a messy scan: delete the blanks → fix the order → rotate the sideways pages → OCR → compress. Doing it in that sequence means you’re not recognising or compressing pages you’re about to throw away.
Limits
Up to 200 pages and 25 MB, since a thumbnail is rendered for every page. For a longer document, split it into sections first, fix each, and merge them back. An encrypted PDF has to be unlocked before it can be rearranged.
