A Word document rarely gets huge from text alone — a few hundred pages of plain text is still a small file. What actually bloats a .docx into tens of megabytes is embedded images: screenshots pasted at full resolution, photos dropped in without resizing, scanned pages saved straight into the document. Compressing those images is what actually shrinks the file.

Two questions come up often enough to answer directly. Why does the file download as .docx even if you uploaded .doc? A legacy .doc file is normalized to the modern .docx format as part of compressing it — .docx is a more efficient container, so this is a natural side effect of shrinking the file, and the content, formatting, and images stay the same, only the container changes. What if compression barely shrinks the file? That usually means the size wasn’t coming from images in the first place — a text-heavy document with few or no pictures is already fairly compact, and there isn’t much left to compress, so the file’s size is close to its practical minimum already.
Once it’s smaller: convert it to PDF for a format that looks the same everywhere, merge it with other Word documents, or convert to PDF first and then lock it with a password if you need to protect it rather than just shrink it.
