Why Does a Word Document Look Blurry as an Image?

Crisp text in Word turning soft once it becomes a JPG or PNG comes down to two settings, not a broken converter. Here is which one to change.

Text in a Word document is rendered from font outlines — infinitely sharp at any size, because it’s drawn fresh every time. The moment it becomes a JPG or PNG, it’s a fixed grid of pixels instead, and how sharp that grid looks depends entirely on two choices made at conversion time.

Word to Image offers Normal (150 DPI) and High (300 DPI). DPI controls how much pixel detail gets captured per inch of the page — Normal is tuned for screens, chat apps, and social posts, where it looks perfectly sharp at the size it’s actually displayed. The blur shows up specifically when a Normal-quality image gets zoomed in past 100% or printed at a larger size than it was built for — there’s no more detail to reveal than what was captured, so enlarging it just makes the existing pixels bigger and softer-looking. If you’re printing the image, embedding it somewhere it’ll be viewed large, or the recipient is likely to pinch-zoom on a phone to read fine print, use High — it captures four times the pixel data of Normal for the same page, which is genuinely necessary for small body text to stay legible once magnified.

The format matters just as much as the resolution. PNG is lossless — every pixel is stored exactly, so text edges and thin lines stay perfectly crisp regardless of how much the file gets compressed, making it the right default for a resume, a certificate, a flyer, or any page that’s mostly typed text. JPG is lossy — it discards some detail to shrink the file, and the artifacts it introduces are most visible exactly where they hurt most: right at sharp edges, which is what every letter of text is made of. A page of small type converted to JPG, especially at Normal quality, can pick up a faint blur or blockiness around the characters that PNG never would. JPG earns its place for photo-heavy pages, where its smaller files matter and the compression artifacts blend into photographic detail instead of standing out against clean white space. The fix for text-heavy documents specifically is PNG, not JPG, regardless of DPI setting — this alone resolves most “why does my text look fuzzy” complaints, because it removes lossy compression from the equation entirely rather than just capturing more pixels of a still-compressed image.

A quick way to tell which problem you have: zoom into the blurry image at 100% on your screen. Soft, blocky edges specifically around letters point to JPG compression — switch to PNG. Everything looking uniformly slightly soft, including images and lines, only at higher zoom levels, points to DPI — switch to High.

Putting it together: a resume, certificate, flyer, or any text-heavy page for print or close viewing wants High quality and PNG. The same document for a quick chat share or a preview thumbnail is fine at Normal, and keeps the file small. A page built mostly around photographs works with JPG at either quality level, since photographic detail hides compression artifacts far better than text does.
